The Pier was where I had alighted the boat and continue onwards. Heading downstream, the boat passed Canary Wharf and the skyscrapers that dominate the skyline, onwards to North Greenwich Pier. The views from the open water were fantastic and a glorious sport to take photographs of Tower Bridge. Onwards, the boat chugged and passed under the even more iconic Tower Bridge. This was a superb view of the cathedral and surrounding architecture.

Next up was passing under Milenium Bridge, which opened up views to the iconic St Pauls Cathedral. It was a glorious day in London and passing all the sights on the river was fantastic.

I finally got on the correct River Bus and back past Parliament, Big Ben and The London Eye. I ended up heading the wrong way on the river, but hey ho, I got to pass Big Ben and houses or Parliament twice. You tap on with a payment card and tap off at the destination. A case of find the right boat on Westminster Pier, then it’s just like the tube. Getting on the river bus was pretty simple. This trip was my first time on the TFL River Bus. The Barrier has been fully operational since 1982. Thames Barrier is a retractable system that they designed to prevent the floodplain of the city from being flooded by abnormally high tides and storm surges. The solution to the problem was to create what we now know as the Thames Barrier. Since Roman times, London has been a problem for the city, thus a solution was required to protect the city from high tides. They name it after the Thames Flood Barrier, which is visible from the public open space. It is in the London Borough of Newham, near to Pontoon Dock DLR station.

The Thames Barrier Park is a 7 acre park on the north bank of the River Thames. First, an introduction to the barrier and associated parkland. I packed my bag for the day, camera fully charged, and the adventure was on. I chose a sunny blue sky day to make my move and head from home in Westminster in central London to Thames Barrier Park. The guide book sold me, thus I had to visit. The park is carefully tended to display variety throughout the year, and provide a welcome habitat for birds and insects.I spotted Thames Barrier Park while reading a guidebook of parks in London. The park also boasts extensive lawns that are crossed by gravel pathways and bordered by yew and maygreen hedges. Two bridges cross the Green Dock and reveal vistas across the colourful, scented gardens. The 'Green Dock' provides a wind protected microclimate for a variety of plants and wildlife. One of the most eye-catching features of the park is the 'Green Dock', a 130 foot long sunken garden running diagonally through the park that is intended as a reminder of the site's dockland heritage. The fountains are temporarily closed while development works take place at Pontoon Dock The parks design features 32 fountains in a stone courtyard and family facilities including children’s play and picnic areas. Since its opening the park has won design awards in the UK and USA. The contaminated soil was covered with a 6 foot layer of crushed concrete to protect the new soil laid on top. Remarkably, the park was created on a site that once housed petrochemical and acid works on the Thames riverbank. Thames Barrier Park was designed by landscape architect Allain Provost (Groupe Signes) of Paris and architects Patel Taylor of London.
